Our History
Northland’s Original Craft Beer
Lion Red, our quintessential Kiwi beer, began life as the Pale Ale from the Great Northern Brewery in 1907 – a great year for beer and an even better one for beer drinkers.
Our fellow Kiwi’s began calling it “Lion Red” because of its red label and can. So, in the mid-1980s, we officially changed the name from Lion Beer to Lion Red.
Over the last century, Lion Red has become a favourite for celebrating great times with good mates.
